Most people are familiar with classics such as Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz, but many will be surprised to learn that the studio which produced them was co-founded by a former Saint John resident. (Take a journey with us by visiting the links and features below, and see how the "poor kid" from Saint John went on to help set the stage for the Golden Age Of Hollywood.) Louis B. Mayer is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Hollywood Film industry. Mayer's real life rags-to-riches story is inspiring for anyone with starry eyes and immeasurable ambition. He was born in Russia in 1884 but spend his formative years in Saint John. He quit school at the age of 12, struggled to help feed his family by selling junk and lived what's described as a "crappy childhood."
Mayer hauled a cart loaded with junk around the streets of Saint John in the late 1800s before becoming of one Hollywood's most powerful magnates.
