Pride of New Brunswick Named "Fastest Ship in the World"

The vessel was constructed at Marsh Creek in SAINT JOHN by James Smith. Construction began in Fall 1850. While under construction the ship's frame was scattered about the shipyard by a storm and the skeleton had to be reassembled. The construction was completed in April 1851 and the vessel was launched at Marsh Creek. Click here to read more about the MARCO POLO

July 4, 1852 The "Marco Polo" sets sail from Liverpool (England), reaching Melbourne (Australia) in a record 76 days. Upon returning to Liverpool in another 76 days, the pride of New Brunswick earns the title of "Fastest Ship in the World".
